  4. HyperX Origins 2 Pro: A Structural Combo of O-Ring Mounting and Swappable Shells

The structural design of the HyperX Origins 2 Pro 65 can be summarized as «O-rings for typing feel, swappable shells for customization.» The O-ring mounting system places silicone rings between the PCB and the mounting plate to provide «light rebound and a deeper sound profile,» addressing common issues in 65% layout keyboards such as hollow resonance and harsh bottom-out sensations. Meanwhile, the swappable shell design transforms the keyboard casing from a static decorative element into a quick-release module; combined with an integrated disassembly tool and publicly available 3D printing files, this lowers the barrier to entry for aesthetic customization.

I. O-ring Mounting: Elevating the Typing Feel of Compact Keyboards

The Origins 2 Pro 65 utilizes an O-ring mounting method, placing silicone O-rings between the PCB and the mounting plate to provide subtle cushioning. HyperX describes the effect as «reduced impact, lower noise, smoother feel, and more balanced sound.» The mounting plate is made of polycarbonate (PC)—a material with inherent flexibility—and when paired with the O-ring cushioning layer, the bottom-out feedback shifts from a «hard, rigid clash» to a «soft yet supported» sensation.

This is particularly crucial for the 65% layout. Compact keyboards have limited internal space, making them prone to cavity resonance and producing sounds that can feel «hollow, scattered, or thin» during typing. The O-rings serve to disrupt vibration transmission paths and reduce high-frequency resonance, resulting in a cleaner, more focused sound. A review by CGMagazine noted that the O-ring system «dampens both sound and tactile impact, delivering a smooth and relatively quiet typing experience,» making it especially appealing to users who prioritize comfort.

The O-rings are removable. Users who prefer more direct, firmer bottom-out feedback can remove the O-rings themselves, reverting the keyboard to a feel closer to that of a traditional plate-mounted design. Such «adjustable» design features are rare in mass-produced keyboards.

II. Swappable Shells: From «Decoration» to «Module»

The swappable shell is the most distinctive design feature of the Origins 2 Pro. The logic here isn’t simply about swapping a decorative faceplate; instead, it involves isolating the entire keyboard core—comprising the PCB, switches, and mounting plate—from the outer shell. This core assembly is secured to the shell using rubber gaskets. Users can simply use the built-in disassembly tool found at the bottom of the keyboard to unlock the anchor points and pull the core out of the shell.

The shell itself features a quick-release design that requires no screws. HyperX states that users can «easily swap shells to match their setup or mood—ranging from minimalist and clean to bold and expressive—without compromising performance or responsiveness.»

Even more interesting is that HyperX has released the 3D printing files (in STEP format) on the Printables platform. This means users don’t have to wait for official new colorways; they can print their own shells. Reviewers have noted that this system «lowers the barrier to entry for DIY keyboard modding,» offering a low-risk starting point for users interested in custom keyboards but lacking experience.

III. Division of Roles: Performance vs. Structure

The core performance specifications of the Origins 2 Pro 65 include magnetic switches, an 8K polling rate, Rapid Trigger, and SOCD support. It is equipped with linear Hall-effect magnetic switches that allow for per-key actuation point adjustment via NGENUITY software, as well as support for Rapid Trigger and SOCD (simultaneous opposite cardinal direction processing). The 8K polling rate is adjustable through NGENUITY rather than running at maximum speed by default.

The O-rings and swappable shells address the dimensions of «feel» and «aesthetics»; they play no part in the actuation logic and do not affect the precision of the magnetic switches. This division of roles is clear: the magnetic switches ensure speed and accuracy, the O-rings provide comfort and pleasant acoustics, and the swappable shells offer visual appeal and fun.
