  4. Alice Layout Keyboards: A ”Transitional Solution” for Ergonomic Keyboards

The Alice layout represents an ”intermediate stage” in the evolution from traditional keyboards to split ergonomic keyboards. It retains the standard QWERTY layout and typing technique while employing a split-zone design, a central depression, and an outward tilt to keep the wrists in a relatively natural position during use. However, there are clear limits to its ergonomic benefits: the integrated, one-piece structure prevents adjustment of the spacing or angle between the left and right sides, offering limited relief for users already suffering from carpal tunnel syndrome or repetitive strain injuries. Its true value lies in its low barrier to entry—offering a more comfortable wrist posture than traditional linear keyboards with minimal learning curve.

The Alice layout addresses this by splitting the alphanumeric section into left and right halves, angled outward in a ”V” shape. This increases the distance between the hands, allowing the palms and arms to remain aligned and the shoulders to open naturally. The center of the keyboard often features a raised section—creating a tent-like slope—which further reduces the degree of inward wrist rotation.

Regarding key placement, the Alice layout preserves the standard QWERTY arrangement but splits the spacebar into left and right halves for use by either hand. It typically includes a ”B” key on both the left and right sides to accommodate different typing habits. Additional function keys are often added to the thumb zones to reduce the strain placed on the little fingers and wrists.

II. Från kund till massproduktion: Alice-layoutens uppkomst

The Alice layout originated in the open-source keyboard community. The TGR Alice kit, released in 2018, is considered a milestone for this layout, establishing the fundamental design of split zones, a central depression, and dual spacebars. In early 2022, the ”Spring” keyboard released by the domestic studio Owlab significantly fueled the popularity of the Alice layout within China’s custom keyboard community.

III. Utveckling av form: Från monoblock till split

Alice-layouten i sig diversifieras.

– Standard Alice: Features a monoblock design where the left and right key clusters are fixed to a single baseplate; the angle and spacing are non-adjustable. This is currently the most common form and a classic example of a ”transitional solution”—it improves wrist angles but does not allow users to adjust the positioning of their hands based on their specific shoulder width or sitting posture.

– Split Alice: Completely separates the left and right keyboard halves, allowing users to freely adjust the distance and angle between them. The Keychron Z11 Ultra 8K is a representative model of this category. This design moves beyond the scope of ”monoblock keyboards,” approaching the characteristics of true ergonomic keyboards.

IV. Ergonomiska begränsningar och inlärningskurvan

The Alice layout is not without controversy. Some argue that the ergonomic benefits of monoblock Alice keyboards are limited; because the spacing and angle between the hands cannot be adjusted, the design merely shifts the wrist position from ”clearly unnatural” to ”relatively natural” without fundamentally resolving posture-related issues.

There is also a learning curve involved. Users typically require an adjustment period of one to two weeks; accidental key presses may occur initially, particularly as users build new muscle memory for the ”B” key position and the split spacebar. Additionally, Alice keyboards are generally wider than traditional keyboards of the same size, occupying more desk space. Some models are quite thick and require a wrist rest; without one, the wrists may be left hovering, leading to increased fatigue. More importantly, the Alice layout is not suitable for users who already suffer from carpal tunnel syndrome or symptoms of repetitive strain injury. For these users, a split keyboard or a vertical mouse is a more effective solution.
